All of Us Are Dead: Probably my favorite zombie series!

All of Us Are Dead is a zombie series available on Netflix and it is actually based on a Webtoon whose author is Joo Dong-geung. A Webtoon is a type of digital comic originated in South Korea and you can read it on a computer or smartphone by just scrolling down. So, as it is an adaptation of a comic, it actually fits with my blog, and I want also to write a post about this amazing series, whose creators are Lee Jae-kyoo, and Chun Sung-Il.

Webtoon

Synopsis:

The plot is centered on a group of students who have to survive after a failed science experiment that lead to a zombie apocalypse. These students are trapped in their high school with many zombies which before they were students, teachers, and even their friends. In order to survive, they have to use every strategy they can with what they can find in the school. While they are trying to survive this chaos, there will be drama and love stories between these characters where they will learn the importance of life, get to know and share with each other better, and even make new friendships with new people. The series is located in the high school of a fictional city called Hyosan.

Reality:

What made me this series love a lot, is that I think it gets closer to how people would do or react in a zombie apocalypse in real life. Students, normal people, influencers, and even the government I believe they would react and do the same decisions as the ones from the series. Even the motive of the creation of the virus I would say it can happen in real life. If other series or movies the virus was created just by accident and not by any other motive or just to use it as a weapon, this one would be created by a science teacher, and as in other real cases from nowadays, the school and the authorities didn't take seriously the bullying that his son suffered. So he tried to protect him by creating the Jonas Virus, which is extracted from the hormones of mice and whose purpose was to remove the feeling of fear from human psychology. That way, his son could defend himself from his bullies.

But it didn't result well and his son became the first zombie. I actually believe that it is more probable that a zombie virus would be created that way, where we just need one person who suffers from the injustice cases that many suffer too in reality. The implementation of this was really crazy because I couldn't even blame the scientist. The series shows us how good people can suffer from selfish ones and demonstrates to us the high consequences of that by making their lives miserable. It was a pure gem to mix reality cases like that with the fictional plot of creating a virus, very well done in that!

All of Us Are Dead Virus

Now, let's talk about the other part, I think also the government would act the way it did, some things would be for the good of everyone, and some other measures and decisions they make would be tough and affect innocent people too. Also as we can see nowadays too, the series shows us how selfish can be the politicians even in hard times just to win elections, nothing far from reality too.

Other parts of the series are the regular people who are in the city of Hyosan trying to survive, and the ones who are out of danger in other cities and countries. Obviously, the actions and the decisions of the ones in the city would not be far away from reality if something like this happened. Here, we would try to survive and think about our beloved ones any time and all the actions of the characters in the series show that. What is surprising there is that I think they really nailed it too about how people out of danger would react. As we can see in previous hard times and the most recent one which was the pandemic, some people do not care at all and have no respect for others, and they laugh about the hard times others are living, like the pranks some teenagers did in the series making everyone believed that one of them was really a zombie. They scared them, recorded it too, and uploaded it on the media.

Also, there would be people who only want to call attention and that are willing to go to the place where the zombies are and recorded it live. The way they did this is insane, people believed that all people would go with the military or something and everyone would take the situation seriously but the ones who created this masterpiece were more realistic. Nowadays that are many videos and influencers who usually do not take seriously the hard times others are living and the crazy of that is the high audience they have. So the way they adapted those absurd and illogical behaviors that humans have was genuine!

A different approach:

The new proposal for this series is not the same as other known projects like Resident Evil. This approach is nothing at all military, or epic with action scenes. They offer us a drama story between common people and how their lives change and are going to change more in a world of zombies, and I have to say this was more entertaining to me than others. The whole creativity of this proposal is what called my attention to see the series.

Death and cruelty:

Here we also can we see more about the feeling of losing people important to your life and you just want to finish this once and for all. And as the Koreans did very well in Squid Game, they also show us the cruelty of the world and the tough deaths of some characters.

Empathy and tension:

As we even feel empathy with the scientist, imagine how you would feel when you watch the main characters, you will understand the way of being from each one (except maybe of the bullies of course), from the ones who are scared to the ones who have more principles. And as you like them a lot they manage to create and keep the tension in every chapter that makes you want to start quickly the next one to see what is going to happen to the characters.

Great Details:

If that wouldn't be enough, as this is another Korean series from Netflix, the great quality of the series is great, like Squid Game. There is not so much censure, and, as always, the makeup they used is on another level. The creativity, the time, and the passion in their work are well shown in the series and you can realize of that because they even built the whole school just for the series! And that way they could show us many great sequences in the series because the scenes were actually real. Of course, as this is a zombie series, there would be CGI, but they tried not to use and abuse of that a lot.

Additionally, it was pretty cool how they adapted the series to real-world situations, where they are using medias similar to Twitch or Youtube, or how they even included COVID-19 in the series too. In one chapter they explain to us how many days people should be in quarantine for all the measures to take with all the viruses and diseases that already exist like covid-19 and then the fictional one which would be the zombie virus.

Also, other great details were to show us some basic survival tactics as a character from the series is a firefighter and his daughter learned some tactics from him too.

Cast:

Since Squid Game, Korean series are becoming more popular in the present, and I believe with time some people would recognize some people from the cast:

All of us are dead cast

From the cast, I recognize one person that also was in Squid Game, and as many should know, I am talking about nothing more and nothing less than the actress Lee Yoo-mi. And I want to dedicate her one special recognition in this post because she showed a great performance. The way she could adapt to two completely different characters is admirable. She did it pretty well in both series!

Conclusion:

I absolutely recommend this series because I think this is what honestly can happen if there is a zombie virus break out. This has a unique essence and a proposal that will make you feel the suspense until the end of the season!
